Stavlos Summer retreats
Residential
In the southeast of Karpathos, we designed three unique residences inspired by the traditional stable, a simple structure once used for temporary living during the harvest season. This concept blends tradition with modern needs. The homes are located close to each other, unified by a pergola—either open to the sky or shaded with wicker—creating continuity in the outdoor spaces.
The plot, elongated and oriented toward the sea, offers unobstructed views of the Aegean. Set back from the road, the residences provide both privacy and panoramic vistas. At the rear, parking and entrances are sheltered by stone elements, protecting the spaces from strong winds while integrating the buildings with the natural landscape.
The design maximizes natural light and views while ensuring comfort for guests. The outdoor areas between the residences are landscaped with local plants, enhancing the connection to nature. The courtyards offer spaces for dining, lounging, and relaxation in a jacuzzi, with each residence forming an L-shape around its courtyard to create a private, serene environment. Each courtyard also includes a small garden with an olive tree and aromatic herbs.
Inside, the layout is simple but thoughtful, combining functionality with aesthetic appeal. The open-plan design accommodates a bedroom, kitchen, living room, and bathroom, with different areas distinguished by a change in level and wooden structures. On the lower level are the kitchen and living room, while a short staircase leads to the bedroom and bathroom, evoking the traditional Karpathian “sofa” and referencing the island’s architectural heritage. Large windows open to the courtyard and the sea, blending indoor and outdoor spaces and allowing natural light to flood the interior.
A standout feature in each residence is the large semi-circular shower with a circular bathtub beneath a skylight, offering both natural light and ventilation. This unique space enhances the overall feeling of comfort and luxury.
These residences represent a harmonious fusion of tradition and modernity, offering a unique and comfortable stay. The architecture respects the natural environment while embracing modern comforts, allowing guests to experience the cultural heritage of Karpathos in a fresh, contemporary way. The design reflects a connection between past and present, offering a living experience that honors both.
